it was apparently clean water, which is a major step up from tubercular sewage

Things were just busy enough to keep me from writing and yet not so interesting that I have anything to report. Sometimes life is like that. Kir and I have settled into a pretty good rhythm of being just the two of us. We miss Rani, but we’re okay on our own. We have established a rule that Kir works on his paper every day after dinner for an hour. I sit in the room with him, and do my own work. I’m thinking of trying to write a book about my time in Central Asia. Not a novel or anything, more like a collection of essay on what it’s like. Like Bill Bryson, only not as funny. I have a bunch of ideas for essay topics, and if the book doesn’t fly I can always try to sell the individual essays. We suspect there may be some kind of curse on my organization. When we got to work today, the landlady was waiting for us with the news that my office has been soaked by a leak from the ceiling. When we went in to look at it, it was indeed very wet. The irony here is that we left our last office because the ceiling leaked. This leak, though, should be a one-time deal. They are doing renovation in the apartment above, and apparently they did something to a pipe that they didn’t know was there. Some of my books are water damaged, but it’s not too drastic. And it was apparently clean water, which is a major step up from tubercular sewage. It’s interesting reading other people’s online journals. They’re talking now about the end of summer, with a certain sadness. For us there’s no end of summer in sight, and when it does end we’ll be grateful more than anything else. The nights are finally getting cooler; you no longer stand around outside and sweat. There doesn’t seem to be any change in daytime temperature. It’s possible that it was so hot that 5 degrees cooler makes no difference yet. The good seasons here are spring and fall. When spring warms into summer, that is what brings sadness. Summer is not something you mourn the end of – summer you buckle down and survive as best you can. **** Ian got his PhD yesterday. Go Ian! I am thinking of changing his pseudonym to Dr. Ian in honor of his accomplishment. ****
