Thoughts from the Eurovision Song Contest: Actual quote from Norway’s entry – “I’m in love / with the beautiful girl / she’s the one / from the magical world…” What is he, in love with a leprechaun? And Kir is of the opinion that the Norwegian education system ought to be capable of teaching people use of articles. From Alf Poier, the Austrian contestant in the contest: “My song is a hymn for individualism and against collectivism. I am also for balls and against circles, for corners and against edges, for trees and against the forest. In my performance it is not so much the song that counts but the moral attitude behind it. Whoever votes for me is against being standardized and cemented in by 'European Banality'.” His song was also completely ludicrous. He did get 94 points, much better than the British 0. (found via samizdata.net) Yes, the British got not a single point. The BBC commentator seemed to think it was Iraq backlash, but I have a feeling it was because Jimini, the British entrant, sucked. I mean, there was no evidence in the performance that English was actually their native language. Tomorrow’s my birthday! Kir is going to make me a cake. No on has ever made me a birthday cake before except my mom. I feel all warm and cozy about it. (note to mom: this does not free you from your obligation to make a cake in San Francisco) My birthday is coming, Nafesa emailed to tell me she loves me, and I’m on my way to see the brother and Mom and Ian. (Well, day after tomorrow on my way.) Life is good.
